Based on a pose of Bianca in Shakespeare’s Othello, the new sculpture could provide a unique landmark

Theatre Royal Plymouth is applying for planning permission to install a piece of public art.

The bronze sculpture is to be sited outside the theatre's main entrance and will stand seven metres high so visitors will walk between its legs on their way in. The whole structure will weigh around 3,500kg.

The Theatre Royal Plymouth and Frantic Assembly's 2008 award-winning co–production of Shakespeare’s Othello, which was the topic of an earlier exhibition, is the inspiration behind the work.

Adrian Vinken, the venue's chief executive, said, “when we completed the Regeneration Project, we wanted to install something outside the building that reflected the creativity that is at the heart of it.

“A sculpture such as this will have a transformational impact not just on the theatre, but the whole of the city of Plymouth. A major piece of public art transforms the world’s perception of what a place is like; it makes a statement about a city that it’s modern, it’s contemporary and it’s on the move.

“It will be a brilliant thing for the city. It will be one of those iconic structures that destinations become forever associated with.”

The sculpture, if planning permission is approved, will be funded from funds raised for the now–complete Regeneration Project. The estimated cost is £450,000.
