Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities, is a new three-year programme from Theatres Trust.

It is focussed on reducing the threat to At Risk theatres and building the sector’s resilience as it emerges from the exacting period caused by the global pandemic.

In particular it will support communities operating or considering taking responsibility for a theatre building.

There are three elements to Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities

  • three to six theatres deemed to be most in need in each year will benefit from a grants programme to fund strategic and organisational development work
  • a new training and knowledge sharing programme, including a series of free webinars open to all theatres
  • supporting the sector through development of the Trust’s existing specialists advice-giving service

Sue Bowers from funders Pilgrim Trust has “The Pilgrim Trust is delighted to continue its relationship with the Theatres Trust and to support this important programme. Historic theatres at risk face a multitude of complex issues that need to be resolved if they are to have a sustainable future. The advice, expertise and encouragement that this programme will provide to the groups who are campaigning to save these theatres for the future is greatly needed. “

Theatres Trust is the national advisory body for theatres; Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities has received a grant of £249,900 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and funding from the Pilgrim Trust and Swire Charitable Trust. The Theatres at Risk Register is updated annually by the Theatres Trust and covers theatre buildings under threat in the UK; currently there are 41 on the list, including an unprecedented 10 new additions.

Details of the grants programme will be announced in December.
