Two premières, “some of the best UK and international choreographic talent” and “the opportunity to see some of the best youth talent in the West Midlands” are on offer in Birmingham-based dance agency DanceXchange’s spring season.

Lucie Mirkova, head of artistic programmes at DanceXchange, said, “our programme celebrates the resilience of the dance sector over the past two years as we move forward with creativity and optimism, featuring work from both established and up-and-coming choreographers. After such a difficult time for so many we’re delighted to continue to welcome both artists and our audiences to the theatre.”

The season starts on Thursday 10 February with the UK première of Léa Tirabasso’s Starving Dingoes. Five dancers try to stay together to survive. Tirabasso “plunges the audience into the dreamworld of childhood—that of regained freedom, poetry, brutality and violence”.

The Alexander Whitley Company will present Overflow on Wednesday 2 March. Overflow considers “how our desires, fantasies and vulnerabilities are influenced by social media platforms, exploring what lurks beneath our compulsions to check, share and like”.

On Tuesday 22 March, DanceXchange in partnership with Artists 4 Artists and The Place will present a world première double bill. Jamaal O’Driscoll’s Crabs in a Barrel explores themes of toxic masculinity while Yami Löfvenberg’s Happyendingfication is an “autobiographical solo uncovering the marginalised conversation around the impacts of being an adult adoptee”.

The spring season concludes with U.Dance WM, an evening “full of vibrant and exciting dance genres and themes performed by some of the best young talent from across the West Midlands”, on Sunday 27 March.

All events will be presented in DanceXchange’s home venue, The Patrick Studio at Birmingham Hippodrome.
