The 39 Steps

The hit West End play The 39 Steps—currently celebrating its sixth year in the capital’s Criterion Theatre—is back on tour, calling at the Opera House, Manchester next month.

Based on John Buchan’s 1914 spy thriller and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 movie the show was adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow.

It becomes a comedy thriller featuring four actors playing 139 roles in 100 minutes. Richard Ede takes the role of the dashing Richard Hannay, alongside Charlotte Peters, Gary Mackay and Tony Bell, who play the other 138 between them.

The production has won many awards including an Olivier and Whatonstage.com for Best Comedy, two Tony Awards for Best Lighting and Best Sound Design, two Drama Desk Awards for Unique Theatrical Experience and Outstanding Lighting and the Molière award for Best Comedy.
