Whiting Award Winners it felt empty when the heart went at first but it is alright now by Lucy Kirkwood and The Author by Tim Crouch share the 2010 John Whiting Award, given annually to the new play which best demonstrates an original and distinctive development in dramatic writing and has been instrumental in the development of the careers of some of the UKs most respected playwrights. Kirjkwood's play is about a woman trafficked into prostitution and was developed during a residency with Clean Break funded by the Peggy Ramsey Foundation. Commissioned by Clean Break and produced by them in association with Arcola Theatre, it premiered in October 2009. The play was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize 2010 and was longlisted for an Evening Standard Theatre Award (Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright). Lucy Kirkwood said, "It felt at the time that we were making something special and its lovely to have that recognised. However, the problem with sex trafficking that the play addresses is as entrenched as ever and will only grow more so with the advent of the Olympics. I hope that this award will help us in bringing the play to bigger audiences and raising further awareness of this problem." Tim Crouchs The Author premiered at the Royal Court in September 2009 and is currently playing in Dublin, after which it goes on to Warwick Arts Centre (19th - 23rd October); Budapest; Workshop Theatre, Leeds (5th & 6th November); The Door, Birmingham (10th - 13th November); Manchester Royal Exchange (16th - 20th November) and Lisbon. It won a Total Theatre Award for Innovation for its run at the Traverse Theatre during the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe. The award was judged by a panel which included Anthony Clark, James Dacre, Stella Feehily, Peter Petralia and Duska Radosavljevic.
