Attenborough said of his award, "I am honoured and flattered to be given this prestigious award from such a distinguished and hugely respected organisation, particularly when previous winners have included directors such as Peter Brook and Michael Grandage and the panel contains many admired theatre practitioners."

Attenborough has been artistic director of the Almeida since 2002 and has overseen productions of many plays from around the world in that time, including the ones particular mentioned by Shulman when presenting the award: Sam Shepard’s The Late Henry Moss (2006), Clifford Odets's Awake and Sing (2007), Ingmar Bergman’s Through A Glass Darkly (2010), Andrew Bovell's When The Rain Stops Falling (2009), three premieres by Neil LaBute, most recently Reasons To Be Pretty (2011), and his current production of Eduardo de Filippo's Filumena.
