The Writers' Guild Awards have announced the shortlists for the 2016 prizes.

As well as a special award for outstanding contribution to writing, the awards cover categories in film, television, radio and stage writing and Best Writing in a Video Game.

Writers’ Guild of Great Britain is a trade union representing writers across a wide range of genres; its awards scheme was launched in 1961, to recognise and celebrate the importance of writing to the creative industries.

The Best Play shortlist is Jefferson’s Garden by Timberlake Wertenbaker, Liberian Girl by Diana Nneka Atuona and Temple by Steve Waters and that for Best Play for Young Audiences is Bird by Laura Lomas, Muddy Choir by Jesse Briton, Three Wise Monkeys by Mike Kenny.

The shortlist for each of the 12 categories is in our feature article. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in January.
