Newcastle’s Dance City has announced its autumn 2016 programme, its most ambitious season of performances yet – and the biggest outside London.

  • 24 September (8PM)
    Rosie Kay Dance Company
    (Best Independent Company at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards 2015)
    Double Points: K and Motel
    Double Points: K is based on mirroring, and the work was described by The Herald as "an Everest of synchronicity, timing and stamina" whilst Motel is a "slick, sexy and dark duet" that explores the concept of hotel rooms, what goes on in them, and what ghosts are left behind.

    Jasmin Vardimon Company
    Pinocchio
    Combining physical theatre, quirky characterisation and innovative technologies to explore what it means to be human, Pinocchio is suitable for age 7+.

    Phoenix Dance Theatre (35th anniversary tour)
    Triple Bill
    Undivided Loves by Kate Flatt fuses sound, words and dance to reimagine Shakespeare’s most intimate, mysterious and radical sonnets.
    Until.With/Out.Enough, a conceptual piece, explores the enclosed space that exists within our minds.
    Bloom by Caroline Finn explores the darkly comic expressions of life and humanity.

    Dance Edits
    New work by eight dance artists based in the North East. The pieces are all short (5-10 minutes) and the work is extremely varied which makes it a snapshot of contemporary dance in the region.

  • 21 October (7PM)
    Jam ’n’ Juice
    The only Hip Hop Theatre event in the North East - a mix of classic street styles alongside innovative new work.

  • 23 October (2PM)
    Just Jam Intl Battle
    B-boys and b-girls from all over the world go head to head in dance-offs to win the ninth annual title.

  • 26 October (10:30AM (relaxed performance) and 2PM)
    Moxie Brawl
    Windibops
    A family show. Dancing scientists Volta Flatulence, Caroline Trumpface and Daisy Parphead investigate flatulence and global warming.

  • 28 (7:30PM) and 29 October (8PM)
    Joli Vyann
    Stateless
    A fusion of dance, theatre and circus skills which takes the audience on a heart-breaking and often breath-taking journey of immigration, humanity and tolerance.

  • 4 November (7:30PM)
    James Wilton
    Leviathan
    An athletic reimagining of Moby Dick blending athletic dance, martial arts and capoeira.

  • 11 (7:30PM) and 12th November (2:30PM)
    Motionhouse
    Scattered
    Combines daring choreography with digital projection technology to create a world where dancers and images interact seamlessly.

  • 19 November (8PM)
    Joan Clevillé Dance
    Plan B for Utopia
    Searching for meaning in the concept of utopia, and how imagination and creativity can play as a driving force for change in our personal and collective lives.

  • 7 – 10 December (various times)
    CoisCéim Dance Theatre (Dublin)
    The Wolf and Peter
    The story is told through the eyes of a breakdancing Wolf who, along with a Bird, a Cat, a Duck and a Boy, takes the audience on a thrilling adventure through the forest and through dance. Suitable for age 6+.
    Note: the first performance (at 10:30AM on 7 December) is already sold out.

There will be a Theatre Season Launch Event on Thursday 15 September at 6PM, where Dance City’s Artistic Director, Anthony Baker, will talk about the programme over complimentary drinks provided by Durham Distillery. Attendees will get 10% off performance bookings on the night, and will enjoy live and recorded previews. Tickets for the Launch Event are free.
