The first spring season at Darlington’s new Hullabaloo, the region’s only theatre dedicated to work for children and young people, has been announced.

  • 15 – 17 February (11:00 and 2:30) (40 mins)
    White
    Created by
    Catherine Wheels Theatre Company
    For ages 2 – 4

The beautifully strange world of White is full of birdsong and birdhouses and gleams and dazzles and shines in the night. Two friends look after the birds and make sure the eggs stay safe. We watch, we help. The world is bright, ordered and white. But high up in the trees, all is not white. Colour appears. First red… then yellow… then blue…

  • 9 – 10 March (Various times) (45 mins)
    One Item Only
Presented by Margarita Sidirokastriti & the egg
    For age 7+

If you had to take a long journey away from home and you could only take one item with you, what would it be? The story of one boy’s journey across continents in search of refuge from his troubled homeland.

  • 17 – 18 March (Saturday 11:00 and 1:30; Sunday 11:00) (30 mins)
    Aston’s Stones
From a book by Lotta Geffenblad
    Presented by Teater Pero

Aston is a little dog who wants to take care of all the stones he can find. Some are big and some are small. One is sad, another feels cold. All of them need to be taken care of. Every stone gets to follow Aston home and is greeted with a warm and cosy bed. His two parents, although very patient and understanding, gradually get more and more worried about the increasing number of stones in their living room.

  • 22 – 24 March (Various times) (25 mins)
    Glisten
A Daniel Naddafy production for Half Moon
    For ages 0 – 18 months

An interactive performance for babies aged 0-18 months and their grown-ups in which the audience is taken on a gentle and immersive journey exploring the world of reflective materials wrapped up in a soundscape of evocative yet laid-back music. Watch as the empty space of the theatre fills with colour, sounds and surprises, creating a sensory landscape ready to explore after the performance is over.

  • 11 – 13 April (11:00 and 2:30) (40 mins)
    Egg and Spoon
    Presented by Lyngo Theatre
    For age 1 – 5

The very young won’t sit still to watch a show and we don’t expect them to. Percy and April get you settled on our comfortable cushions and introduce you to Birdy, still hiding in his glowing egg. We have to wait till spring if we want to see him so it’s time to begin our hands-on journey through the year. We’ll run through the rain and the falling leaves and sleep under the snow till the sun wakes us up for the butterfly party.

Miranda Thain, Artistic Producer at Theatre Hullabaloo said, “we are delighted to announce our opening programme of visiting companies to The Hullabaloo, a real mixture of brilliant stories, beautifully and bravely told, that will appeal to the whole family. Alongside our programme of music sessions, creative play, storytelling and themed family events, this spring really launches The Hullabaloo as a centre of play and creativity.

“We have already been overwhelmed by the response from children, families, schools and groups who have come in to enjoy our child-centred facilities, including our family friendly café and free creative play installations. Our Enchanted Forest creative play installation is at The Hullabaloo until the end of February and is the first in a series of specially commissioned play installations. It has already proved popular amongst parents and teachers alike.”
