Powell is King in Birmingham REP tour opener

Robert Powell plays the title role in Mike Bartlett’s play King Charles III which will have its regional première at Birmingham REP before it goes on a major UK tour.

As previously announced, Powell will play King Charles who ascends the throne after the death of the Queen. His portrayal of Jesus in Jesus of Nazareth won him a BAFTA nomination for best actor and he was a regular as Mark Williams in the TV series Holby City.

His theatre credits include Singin' in the Rain at the Palace Theatre, Tom Stoppard’s Travesties for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and touring productions of Ted Willis’s adaptation of Richard Gordon’s novel Doctor in the House and Keith Waterhouse’s Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell.

The rest of the cast is Penelope Beaumont as Camilla, Ben Righton as William, Richard Glaves as Harry, Jennifer Bryden as Kate, Lucy Phelps, Giles Taylor, Parth Thakerar, Tim Treloar, Beatrice Walker and Paul Westwood.

Rupert Goold directs with Whitney Mosery. Design is by Tom Scutt, music is composed by Jocelyn Pook, lighting is by Jon Clark and sound by Paul Arditti.

Bartlett's play “explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy and the conscience of Britain's most famous family”.

King Charles III was given Olivier, Critics’ Choice and South Bank Sky Arts awards for best new play.

The production runs at The REP from Friday 4 until Saturday 19 September. Press night will be Tuesday 8 September.
