Although The Sage in Gateshead is the North East’s major music venue, featuring primarily classical, jazz, folk, pop and world music, every season has shows of theatre interest.

The autumn/winter season ends with the ever-popular Christmas animated film, The Snowman, with Howard Blake’s music played live by the Royal Northern Sinfonia, from 22 to 24 December.

The Sinfonia opens the theatrical spring season on 5 February with The Cole Porter Songbook, followed on 12 February by A Night at the Viennese Opera, a special Samling ‘Coming of Age’ Gala in which is orchestra is joined by ‘exceptional’ young singers who are being nurtured by the Samling Artists Programme. The Gala is directed by Sir Thomas Allen.

On 13 April, Samling Artists again joins the Sinfonia along with the RNS Chorus for a concert performance of Handel’s Israel in Egypt.

Finally on 20 May, Opera North returns to the venue with a new concert staging of Puccini’s Turandot.
