Newcastle’s balletLORENT has received a digital commission from The Space to capture a live recording of Rumpelstiltskin for digital distribution during its première at Northern Stage in October 2017.

Rumpelstiltskin is the third and final instalment of the balletLORENT’s trilogy of classic Brothers Grimm fairytale adaptations, following Rapunzel (2012) and Snow White (2015).

The Space aims to help artists and organisations make great art and reach new audiences digitally by commissioning projects, building digital skills, and helping organisations and venues reach more people using digital media. Work by arts organisations funded and supported by The Space has resulted in total audience numbers of 8.3m for the period June 2014 to February / March 2017. During this time, it has commissioned 99 arts projects from 73 organisations and artists across the UK.

The latest series of commissions were announced on Monday 4 April 2017.

Rumpelstiltskin will be produced by the same creative team as the first two works, including Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy (Scenario Writer), Murray Gold (Composer), Michele Clapton (Costume Designer), Phil Eddolls (Set Designer), Malcolm Rippeth (Lighting Designer) and Ben Crompton (Narrator). It is commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and co-produced by Northern Stage.

“I am privileged to have been part of the audience at BBC Radio Theatre this morning and to hear the exciting announcement from Tony Hall that major cultural organisations are coming together with an ambition to attract new audiences to the arts,” said Artistic Director Liv Lorrent.

“We are delighted that balletLORENT is one of the national companies that is to be supported by The Space, and has been included as part of an exciting launch of digital work today.

“Being able to connect with audiences has been at the heart of balletLORENT's reason for existing, and we are excited to reach people through a digital medium where enjoyment of our work will become more freely available to those who are unable to see us live in theatres.”
