The Late Shows

The first ever completely free Twilight Shows aimed at teenagers are coming to Newcastle and Gateshead on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May in response to what nearly 1,000 children and young people said during the Big Culture Conversation earlier this year: that they wanted more things to see and do between 4:00 and 7:00.

Seven venues have made special arrangements to open their doors at different times during this year’s Late Shows, offering screenings, workshops and events, all for a younger than usual audience—12- to 17-year-olds.

Highlights include:

  • A showing of Love, Simon at Tyneside Cinema at 4:00 on 18 May, free for all under-18s
  • Knock-your-socks-off punk and spoken word at Alphabetti Theatre, from 5:00 on 19 May
  • Dance is the Word! Grease dance-along at Dance City, from 5:00 on 19 May
  • Making abstract art bags and badges in the Art Studio at The Laing, 4:00 to 7:00 on 19 May
  • Open Heart Theatre improvisation workshops at Space Six, 5:00 to 6.30 on 19 May
  • A celebration of comic art at Seven Stories from 6:00 on Friday

Full details can be found on the Twilight Show web site.

The Twilight Shows are a new part of The Late Shows, a free late-night "culture crawl" which takes place in NewcastleGateshead over the weekend of Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May 2018.

During The Late Shows, museums, galleries, studio collectives and landmark historical buildings come together to offer visitors one-off events including hands-on workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, performances and parties. The aim is to encourage people to do something cultural with their evening in celebration of the national event Museums at Night.

There are 57 venues involved in The Late Shows and a further nine in The Late Late Shows (after 11:00).
