The Landor Theatre

News broke two days ago in industry publication The Stage that London's Landor Theatre has closed.

It cites "a dispute between the landlord and the operating company", somewhat at odds with the e-mail that was sent to supporters from the Landor which states that the new reduced seating capacity, "…mean[s] the venue is no longer viable for the size and quality of shows we have produced and hosted, or would wish to in the future."

The reduction in seating capacity from 60 to below 50 is the result of new fire safety protocols.

For patrons of the Landor, the e-mail offers some hope, stating that "the creative team are in negotiations to move forward in a new direction, and in another location."

The venue has been operating for some twenty years, the last 15 under the artistic directorship of Robert McWhir.

Predominantly known for its musical theatre productions, McWhir directed a number of highly successful shows including Sondheim's Follies and Into the Woods and Ahrens and Flaherty's Ragtime the Musical and The Glorious Ones.

Other talented directors whose work has been seen at the Landor include Thom Southerland (The Unsinkable Molly Brown), Andrew Keates (Goodall's The Hired Man and A Winters Tale), and Lotte Wakeham (Austentatious).
