London Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2015

The 61st London Evening Standard Theatre Awards were given out this week at a ceremony at The Old Vic.

Amongst the performance awards, Nicole Kidman received the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress for her performance in Photograph 51, the award for Best Musical Performance went to Imelda Staunton in Gypsy and the Award for Best Actor went to James McAvoy in The Ruling Class.

Royal Court Theatre won in three categories—Molly Davies, Most Promising Playwright, David Moorst, Emerging Talent and Anna Fleischle, Best Design—whilst the National Theatre took home only one award (having been nominated for seven) for The Motherf**Ker With The Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis which received Best Play.

Robert Icke took home the Best Director award for Oresteia which transferred to the Trafalgar Studios from the Almeida.

Of the special awards, the Editor’s Award went to Vanessa Redgrave and the Lebedev Award went to Stephen Sondheim.

Other awards included

  • Newcomer in a Musical– Gemma Arterton (Made in Dagenham)
  • The Evening Standard Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical – Kinky Boots (music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, book by Harvey Fierstein, directed by Jerry Mitchell)
  • Beyond Theatre Award – Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, exhibition at the V&A
