More Neverland adventures: Peter Pan in Scarlet

Newcastle-under-Lyme’s New Vic Theatre and Oxford Playhouse are teaming up to stage the world première of Peter Pan in Scarlet—the sequel to J M Barrie’s Peter Pan.

New Vic artistic director Theresa Heskins has adapted the production which is based on the novel by Whitbread Children’s Book Award winner Geraldine McCaughrean.

Peter Pan in Scarlet is set in 1929. Wendy and the Lost Boys have grown up. Twenty years after they left, they begin to dream of Neverland. Something is wrong and Peter Pan needs their help.

So Wendy, John and the Lost Boys put on their children’s clothes and, armed only with fairy dust, fly back to Neverland to join Peter for one last adventure. But everything has changed and the dangers they meet are beyond their wildest dreams.

The cast features Suzanne Ahmet who appeared in Laura Eason’s adaptation of Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days at the New Vic, Jonathan Charles whose previous New Vic shows include Theresa Heskins’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, her production of Robin Hood and Marian and her adaptation of Mary Orton’s The Borrowers, aerialist Graeme Clint, New Vic regular Michael Hugo who has been in several New Vic shows including Alice in Wonderland, Rebecca Killick who was in the National Theatre tour of War Horse, Natasha Lewis whose credits include The Insatiable, Inflatable Candylion for National Theatre Wales, Mei Mac who took the lead role in tutti frutti and York Theatre Royal’s Snow Child, Perry Moore who was also in Robin Hood and Marian, another New Vic regular Andrew Pollard who in 2016 has taken roles in Victoria Wood’s Talent and Cicely Hailton’s Diana of Dobson’s, Lauryn Redding who appeared in Northern Broadsides’ An August Bank Holiday Lark and Isaac Stanmore whose previous New Vic appearances include Dracula and Robin Hood and Marian.

The production will feature aerial displays directed by Vicki Amedume of Upswing and a musical score by composer James Atherton.

Peter Pan in Scarlet runs at the New Vic from Saturday 23 July until Saturday 6 August before heading to Oxford Playhouse from Friday 12 August until Sunday 4 September.
